In one year, the Attorney General’s Office removed 28,280 firearms from circulation throughout the country. Of these, 10,820 were long weapons, of which 1,096 were seized in the state of Sonora, the third highest figure in the national territory.
The results of the 2024 National Census of Federal Justice Administration detail that throughout 2023, the entities with the highest seizure of weapons, including long, short, artisanal and unidentified weapons, were Baja California (with 2,637), Guanajuato (with 2,472), Nuevo León (2,092), Chihuahua (1,821), Michoacán (1,809), Tamaulipas (1,675) and Sonora (1,666).
However, in relation to long weapons, the three states that lead the list of seizures by the FGR are Tamaulipas, where 1,403 were seized, Sonora, with the aforementioned 1,096, and Michoacán, with 1,089.
The seized short weapons, on the other hand, were concentrated first in Baja California, where the authorities took 1,635 of them out of circulation; in second place, is Guanajuato, with 1,556; in third place, Nuevo León, with 1,275; and in fourth, Mexico City, with 1,215.
The case of Mexico City stands out among the others for being a region where, despite the large figures regarding the seizures of short weapons, long weapons do not reflect a great presence, since only 154 of these were seized.
In addition to firearms, the FGR reported the seizure of 1,417,622 cartridges of commonly used ammunition, as well as 682 grenades or explosives and 87 grenade launchers.
