Nearly 18,000 sterilizations of dogs and cats were performed in Hermosillo this year. The director of the Municipal Institute for Animal Protection and Welfare stated that it is the second city in the country with the most sterilizations.
David Palafox indicated that this year the municipality broke its sterilization record as part of the ongoing population control campaign, and Hermosillo ranks second only to León, Guanajuato, as the municipality with the most sterilizations.
“This year, 2025, we broke the record for sterilizations, reaching almost 18,000 animals sterilized, thanks to this ongoing service provided by the municipal government through the Institute, and the daily sterilization campaigns we conduct,” he stated.
The agency carries out free daily sterilization campaigns to reduce the animal overpopulation in the city, which is estimated at 250,000 dogs and cats, although there is no exact figure.
Last year, 15,000 sterilizations were performed, and next year the goal is to surpass this year’s figure of 18,000 and reach the level of the municipality of León, which performed 20,000 sterilizations this year.
To this end, the city council approved a larger budget than this year’s, he emphasized, so they expect to continue their efforts to balance the dog and cat population.
