The return of these assets was made under an agreement signed between the two countries five decades ago for the recovery of pieces of Mexican cultural heritage.
Mexico repatriated 280 pre-Hispanic archaeological pieces that were in the United States, amid efforts by authorities to recover part of the country’s cultural heritage that has been extracted throughout its history, authorities reported.
The Mexican Foreign Ministry said in a statement that a first returned batch, which was seized in 2012, is made up of 270 pre-Hispanic pieces, mostly carved stone artifacts, mainly projectile, and bifacial points, as well as stone axes.
“It is remarkable a group of copper bells whose occurrence or discovery is rare. These archaeological assets were stolen from various archaeological sites in the state of Sonora, “said the Foreign Ministry in its note released Tuesday night.
The second batch, delivered by the Chandler Museum of Arizona for its return, is composed of 10 pieces, among which anthropomorphic ceramic figures from the Tombs of Tire Culture of western Mexico stand out.
“Some exceed 30 centimeters in height and present remarkable details of ornamentation and adornment of the ancient settlers of pre-Hispanic Mexico,” the note said.
