The Sonora government presented the new license plate design, which will begin circulating in the state in 2025.
This redesign not only modernizes the image of the vehicle registry, but also strengthens safety, visibility, and regional identity, authorities stated a few days ago.
Who must apply for the new license plates in Sonora?
The Ministry of Finance reported that the new design will only apply to those completing license plate registration procedures, that is:
Purchasing new vehicles
Registering used cars that change ownership
Registering vehicles that do not have current license plates
If your vehicle already has current license plates, you do not need to change them. Both versions (the previous and the new one) will remain valid and can circulate in the state without issue.
What changes in the new license plate design in Sonora?
Undersecretary of Revenue, Jorge Iván de la Rosa Flores, explained that this change responds to the need to update a design that had been in place for more than 11 years with minimal adjustments.
The main changes include:
Improved visibility in characters and colors
New safety features
Design featuring iconic Sonoran landscapes: mountains, valleys, and desert
New license plates for eco-friendly vehicles, vintage cars, and people with disabilities
Unique designs for ambulances, patrol cars, and firefighters
Specific classification for border vehicles and public transportation
Why is this change being made?
The new license plate design in Sonora seeks to gradually update the vehicle fleet and offer greater control, safety, and order in the management of vehicles circulating in the state.
