A 23-year-old man, resident of the San Rafael neighborhood in Puerto Peñasco, died of rickettsiosis while being treated at a clinic in Hermosillo, where he had been transferred after presenting health complications.

Érick Francisco Gastélum Pacheco, responsible for Animal Control at the Municipal Health Department, confirmed that he is the first fatal victim of this disease this year, and that this is happening despite the strenuous efforts to prevent and combat ticks, with the support of other departments.

He explained that, in the home where the deceased young man lived, there were also three canine pets, with many ticks, which constantly entered and left the house.

We have already fumigated the house, inside and out. Now we are fumigating all the houses, within two blocks around, in coordination with the Ministry of Health, to try to annihilate any vestige or vector of this disease, as a preventive measure,” he said.

He also pointed out that in one of the surrounding houses that was thoroughly examined, a marked infestation of ticks was found, as well as a pet dog invaded by these insect-like parasites, which died shortly after.

Gastélum Pacheco indicated that preventive actions will continue in all other Rocaportense colonies, but at the same time urged the community to do their part, keeping the yards clean and their pets well cared for, even though the hot season has not yet ended.
