On August 7, in two operations coordinated by Sonora authorities in a building in the municipality of Santa Ana, it was announced that 19 people were arrested. Among those arrested were four minors, who allegedly form part of an organized crime group.
Later, on August 11, another operation was carried out by the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) and the National Guard (GN) in the municipality of Átil, where three more minors were arrested, who had allegedly been recruited as hitmen.
Last Monday, through her account on the social network X, formerly Twitter, journalist Azucena Uresti shared a video, in which the delegate of the Attorney General’s Office in Sonora, Francisco Sergio Méndez, announced that the child hitmen are detained and are between 11 and 13 years old.
In the short video, Méndez explains that every time the topic comes up, he asks himself “where are the parents?”, because he explained that although the penal consequences do not reach the parents, it is their responsibility.
“There is a responsibility on their part, because they do not have the supervision that corresponds to a parent, that is the issue, the children of 11 and 12 years old, what are they doing with the criminal groups,” he explains.
He invites parents to pay attention to the activities of their children, since minors should not be part of criminal groups.
“They are children, practically, of 11-13 years old, they were effectively arrested, that is what I have insisted on enormously every time they ask about the subject, because of the responsibility that the parents could have, because, although it is true that the penal consequences do not go to the parents, here we could think about some responsibility on their part, because they do not have the supervision that corresponds to a parent, that is the issue,” he points out in the video.
