The Secretary of the Interior, Adán Augusto López Hernández, and Senator Gómez Urrutia will seek a response to the demands of the miners in Cananea.
The Cananea workers lifted the blockade on the main highway of Sonora, northern Mexico, on Friday night, after the leader of the Mining Union, Napoleón Gómez Urrutia, communicated the commitment of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to seek a definitive solution to the strike that they have maintained for almost 16 years.
The Secretary of the Interior, Adán Augusto López Hernández, will meet on Monday with Senator Gómez Urrutia to seek a way to respond to the demands of the miners in Cananea, but also of the miners of Taxco, Guerrero, and Sombrerete, Zacatecas, who began the strike on June 30, 2007.
“We continue to trust the President of the Republic and we could not turn a deaf ear to the request that he made to us through the Secretary of the Interior,” explained Gómez Urrutia.
In the talk he had with López Hernández, he made him note that the workers want a definitive solution and this involves forcing the owner of Grupo México, Germán Larrea, to accept responsibility for the strikes and pay the miners what they are entitled to, since that the magnate refuses to meet the requests of the strikers.
The senator from the Morena party made it clear that over a year and a half of talks with the federal government, little has been achieved, since Larrea simply does not respond, “so I think there must be political will to force Grupo México to sit down the negotiating table.
The economic proposal that is reached by consensus will be presented to the Government so that it can assess it and decide it, he added.
