Puerto Peñasco, where the race will take place, is a beautiful coastal city in the north of the country, conveniently trapped between the Sea of Cortez and the Sonoran Desert, it is a place that due to its climate and biodiversity is unique in the world.

The Great Desert Race, a unique “runner” experience of its kind, will take place in Puerto Peñasco, a beautiful coastal city in Sonora, on October 14 and 15 of this year. In this race, competitors will have the opportunity to travel the ancient routes of the Tohono O’odham nation, who have inhabited the area for hundreds of years.

Centuries ago, the Tohono O’odham (people of the desert) ran more than 750 km from the Sea of Cortez at Puerto Peñasco in Sonora (declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013), to the Arizona desert with the intention of bringing fish to his family, covered in salt so that it would arrive fresh; This beautiful tradition is known as the “Salt Walk” and has been the inspiration for the Great Desert Race.

“There is nothing like this race in all of Mexico and Latin America, even in the world, because it brings together three ecosystems that are desert, marshes and beach; it is a race that takes us through all these places and we are also on the sacred ground of a community for which there are no barriers or borders”, mentioned Javier Carvallo, Director of Events of Grupo Expansión.

Present at the press conference were Miguel Torruco Marqués, Secretary of Tourism of Mexico; Célida López Cárdenas, Secretary of Tourism of Sonora; Javier Carvallo, Director of Events for Grupo Expansión; Ernesto Rivas, General Director of Sabino Productions; and Pablo Gil, who won first overall place in the Men’s 75K distance last year.
