In a new blow against drug trafficking on the country’s northern border, federal authorities seized more than 1.8 tons of cocaine in the municipality of San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora, as part of a coordinated surveillance operation.

The operation was led by the State Security Council, under the coordination of Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño, in conjunction with federal forces deployed in the border region.

The seizure took place at a checkpoint, where members of the National Guard inspected a tractor-trailer traveling from San Blas, Nayarit, to Tijuana, Baja California.

During the initial inspection, agents detected irregularities in the cargo box using gamma-ray technology, which led to a more detailed manual inspection.

As a result, 1,877 packages of cocaine, weighing over 1,800 kilograms, were found hidden inside the vehicle.

Two men were arrested at the scene: Efraín “N,” 28, from Navolato, and Jesús “N,” 23, from Villa Juárez, both in the same municipality of Sinaloa.

Authorities also seized a white Kenworth tractor-trailer, which had not been reported stolen but was being used to transport the illicit cargo.

Both the drugs and the detainees were turned over to the Attorney General’s Office in San Luis Río Colorado, where the corresponding investigations will continue.

State authorities emphasized that this seizure is the result of coordinated operations by the Sonora Security Cabinet, which are maintained permanently at strategic points to curb drug trafficking to the United States.

The seizure represents a significant blow to organized crime structures, both due to the volume of the shipment and the disruption of distribution routes.

In this context, Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño reiterated his commitment to maintaining a firm and coordinated strategy among the different levels of government, with the goal of guaranteeing the safety, peace, and tranquility of Sonora’s families.

The investigations continue to determine the exact origin of the shipment and the criminal network involved in its transport.
