Last June, U.S. authorities revoked the mayor’s visa when he attempted to cross the border at the San Luis Río Colorado port of entry, accompanied by his family.

The measure could be related to an ongoing investigation against the mayor, the details of which have not been revealed. However, on November 18, Castro Castro filed for an injunction with the Fifth District Court, under case number 773/2025, seeking to prevent his possible arrest by the Sonora State Attorney General’s Office.

The following day, he was granted a provisional suspension, a measure that, for the time being, prevents authorities from depriving him of his liberty, provided that the crimes for which there might be an arrest warrant do not warrant mandatory or justified pretrial detention.

The mayor has maintained a low profile regarding the seriousness of the immigration issue, avoiding going into detail about the matter, and when questioned about the situation, he directs his responses toward the “problems of Puerto Peñasco.”
