Its name is derived from the terms “Pitic” or “Piti,” which is associated with the name of a local Pima chief or a term in the indigenous language meaning “small place.” It was originally known as Natividad del Señor de Pitiquin. This town reflects its native and colonial heritage.
The name “Pitiquito” has pre-Hispanic echoes. In the center of town, you can find Mission San Diego, founded in 1694 by the Jesuit Eusebio Francisco Kino as part of his work in the region.
Although the Franciscans took over the mission in 1768, the church is particularly home to 18th-century indigenous murals, as it is considered one of the temples with the oldest and best-preserved indigenous art in Sonora.
This area boasts significant natural and cultural wealth that makes the region a tourist destination with great potential. Many of the place names in Sonora have indigenous origins, reflecting its vast cultural richness.
The Unmissable Puerto Libertad
Within the municipality of Pitiquito is Puerto Libertad, a small coastal town on the Gulf of California. One of its main attractions is its tranquil beaches and the cirio forests, which, according to locals, are unique trees that seem like something out of a dream.
Pitiquito is located in the northwest of the state of Sonora and is primarily made up of desert near the coast of the Gulf of California.
