Governor turns Sonora into the economic and logistical center of northwestern Mexico

Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño is consolidating Sonora as the strategic center for economic and logistical development in the northwest of the country with the modernization of the Guaymas and Ciudad Obregón airports, which together represent an investment of approximately 1 billion pesos. He is also re-launching the Port of Guaymas, projects that strengthen air, port, and land connectivity to attract investment, boost tourism, and create jobs.

With an investment of 1.52 billion pesos, the state governor is spearheading the modernization of the Guaymas-Chihuahua Highway, a key project to boost trade and consolidate the port as an engine of economic development, driven by the Sonora Sustainable Energy Plan.

Hermosillo, Sonora; August 30, 2025 – As part of his commitment to making Sonora the strategic hub for economic and logistical development in northern Mexico, Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño is promoting the modernization of the Guaymas International Airport and the Ciudad Obregón Airport, as well as the Port of Guaymas and the construction of the Guaymas-Chihuahua Highway.

The state governor emphasized that these works represent a comprehensive transformation that will enhance air, land, and port connectivity, attracting more visitors and investment, and creating jobs for the people of Sonora.

In coordination with the Ministry of the Navy and the Marina Airport Group, the expansion of the runway and rehabilitation of the airport parking lot began in July of this year, with a budget of 525 million pesos.

In addition, in 2025, work will begin on the rehabilitation of a hangar, the expansion of the final waiting area, and the construction of a new control tower, ensuring safety, efficiency, and comfort for passengers and airlines.

Likewise, with an investment of 449 million pesos, the modernization of the Guaymas International Airport – General José María Yáñez began. This includes the expansion and rehabilitation of the runway, apron, and taxiways, the construction of a control tower, and complementary works on the terminal building and auxiliary services.

Governor Durazo highlighted the progress of the modernization of the Guaymas-Chihuahua Highway, with an investment of 1.52 billion pesos implemented in three 20-kilometer sections. This strategic project will facilitate the transit of goods, strengthen trade, and empower the Port of Guaymas as a hub for economic development, within the framework of the Sonora Sustainable Energy Plan.

With these actions, Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño reaffirms his vision of building a more competitive, modern, and sustainable Sonora, consolidating the state as a benchmark in logistics, tourism, and economic development in Mexico and North America.
