In this communal village located one hour from the United States, the relocation of railway lines by the Army is at a standstill.
Through requests for access to public information, it was confirmed that the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) only allocated 230 million pesos last March to the project that Sonorans call the “Ghost Train.” This project consists of a new 63-kilometer route to bypass the urban center of the city of Nogales, deviating from the original route from the port of Guaymas to connect it to the U.S. rail system.
The lack of funding has increased tensions between authorities, contractors, and affected residents in Ímuris and Nogales throughout the first half of 2025.
“They haven’t delivered on any of the improvements these government officials promised over a year ago. I think this has affected me and my family because I’m the only one still talking to the press,” says Carlos Kempton Torres, a communal landowner whose patience has run out.
