Opposition condemns murder of three sisters in Sonora: “What kind of country allows something like this?”

The murder of a woman and her daughters in Sonora has sparked outrage across the country, not only because three of the victims were girls, ages 11 and 9, two of them twins, but also because of how the events unfolded and the bodies were found.

Politicians and authorities at various levels of government condemned the crime, including opposition party leaders Jorge Romero, national president of the PAN (National Action Party); and his PRI counterpart, Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas.

On his X account, formerly Twitter, Romero Herrera stated that the murder “not only hurts, it outrages,” accusing the case of not being an isolated one, linking it to the high rate of femicides nationwide, among other crimes.

“What happened in Sonora is not only painful, it is outrageous. A mother and her three daughters were murdered. Violence relents, and impunity reigns. This cannot continue to be part of “normality.” Mexico cannot live in fear.

“This is not an isolated case: massacres, femicides, extortion, disappearances. Even if they say it’s ‘declining,’ millions live in fear every day,” the post reads.

Therefore, the PAN leader called for an end to the normalization of violence and demanded “real change” through strengthening local police forces and crime prevention.

“Security is not just rhetoric: it is an obligation of the State. And it is our commitment as a responsible opposition. Mexico deserves to live in peace, and the PAN will not stop until we achieve it,” he added.

For his part, Alejandro Moreno, senator and national leader of the PRI, also condemned the murder and accused the federal government of being negligent in the face of insecurity and lacking a strategy against violence.

“In Sonora, three girls were shot to death: two 9-year-old twins and their 11-year-old sister. They were left abandoned on the road as if they were worthless. Days before, their mother was also found murdered. What kind of country allows something like this?

“The Morena government is negligent and criminal. It stands idly by in the face of insecurity, has no strategy, and doesn’t care about people’s lives. All they care about is power and their dictatorship,” he wrote on the same social media platform.

In the same message, the senator demanded justice for the murder of the four victims, with the phrase: “Not one more girl.”

“We can’t have a Morena government that doesn’t feel this pain, that doesn’t act bravely, and that doesn’t protect its people.

“We demand justice. Not one more girl. “Mexico deserves peace and a government that fights for its people, not one that abandons them,” he concluded.

On July 4, the body of Margarita “N,” a 28-year-old woman, was found at the Miguel Alemán police station, and a day later, her daughters—11-year-old twins Meredith and Madeline, along with their nine-year-old sister Karla—were found near Highway 36 North, approximately 60 kilometers from Hermosillo.

Authorities arrested a suspect in the crime. Governor Alfonso Durazo attributed this incident to the dynamics of organized crime and illicit drug trafficking, factors that, he said, create dangerous environments for children in the area.

Amid public outrage, both groups and civil society demanded clear responses and effective prevention to prevent similar events from happening again in the state.
