The plenary session of the Congress of the State of Sonora ratified on Tuesday the proposal of Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño to appoint Mauricio Ignacio Ibarra Romo to lead the specialized work in the area of anti-corruption in the state.

The new official has an extensive resume that includes the management of social planning of Mexican Food Security (Segalmex), an organization that this six-year term was immersed in a corruption scandal that cost millions of pesos to the national coffers. Ibarra Romo, however, distanced himself from the matter.

“I emphatically deny having participated or intervened in the management of Segalmex when the events that have been investigated by the competent authorities occurred,” he said in a letter addressed to Joaquín López Dóriga after allegations made on Radio Fórmula by the host Michelle Rivera.

The allegations respond to the fact that the curriculum of the new specialized anti-corruption prosecutor refers, in the labor and immediate, to Segalmex, since he served as social planning manager between May 2022 and April of this year, and then moved to the position of human resources manager.

This precedent brought with it questions for the new official of the Durazo government, since it is a decentralized organization that left a “stain” on the period of Andrés Manuel López Obrador:

The federal authorities filed dozens of complaints for property damage after acts of corruption were aired within the government arm designed to address food poverty.

The founder of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) regretted the case, at the end of July, because it was intended that Segalmex would not follow in the footsteps of corruption of the National Company of Popular Subsistence (Conasupo).

“I would say that this is the stain that I take with me, even when we face this corruption without tolerance of any kind. The money was recovered, that also has to be reported,” said Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and assured that it was an “isolated case.”

The proposal of Governor Durazo arose after the resignation of Rogelio López García, who held the position until the last week of September, and was ratified by the Morena deputies and by the independents Raúl González de la Vega and Alejandra López Noriega, while the votes against came from the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), the National Action Party (PAN) and Citizen Movement.

The position granted to Ibarra Romo has a term of four years that could be extended for a longer period or end early if so determined by the State Congress.
