Two elderly women from Arizona were shot dead in a vehicle along a highway in northern Sonora, Mexico, local prosecutors reported on Friday. An operation was immediately launched to find those responsible.

The women, identified as Enedina, 72, and Ubaldina, 82, were found in an overturned white Nissan Pathfinder off the side of the highway. The incident was reported at 10:30 a.m.

A local security source told Reuters that the women held dual U.S.-Mexican nationality.

The highway where the women were found, stretching from the town of Sonoyta near the Arizona border to the city of Caborca, is notorious for violence and the trafficking of migrants seeking better opportunities and security in the United States. The women were originally from Caborca, according to prosecutors.

National Guard and army officers responding to the incident discovered a navy blue Ford F-150 in the vicinity, which had been reported stolen, along with an AK-47 and ammunition.

“Security forces from three levels of government immediately initiated an operation to locate and arrest the criminal group responsible, with the support of specialized air and ground forces,” stated Sonora state prosecutors.
