The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) monitors the most frequented beaches in order to determine whether or not they represent a risk to the health of bathers.
In Sonora, there are three main beaches most contaminated by enterococci, a bacteria that can indicate fecal contamination in the water.
The one that heads the list is in Empalme, in Playa del Sol. According to laboratory analysis, it contains 97 NMP enterococci per 100 milliliters of water.
The second most contaminated beach in the region belongs to the capital of Sonora: Bahía de Kino. This showed that it contains 22 NMP enterococci per 100 milliliters of water.
In Puerto Peñasco, Playa Condominios Princesa or Playa Sandy Beach, also placed in the top 3, with a result of 12 NMP enterococci per 100 milliliters of water.
