Puerto Peñasco, a popular tourist destination in Sonora, Mexico, has seen its economy recover after the reopening of the Sonoyta-Lukeville border crossing with Arizona, which was closed for a month.

The closure caused losses of 34 million dollars and affected nearly 12,000 jobs in real estate and tourism-related activities, according to the director of the Convention and Visitors Office (OCV), Lizeth Ibarra.

She said that the economic and employment recovery will be gradual, but expects a significant boost in March, with the celebration of the “Spring Break”, which will generate a large influx of visitors and spending in the region.
