The Government of Sonora began the modernization of the Los Hornos–Rosario Tesopaco–Nuri–La Quema–San Nicolás section, which is part of the Guaymas-Chihuahua highway, a strategic project aimed at strengthening connectivity between both states, boosting trade, and consolidating the Port of Guaymas as a logistics hub in northern Mexico.
Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño, accompanied by the head of the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina, led the start of the construction works, which are supported by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. The project includes an investment of 15.5 billion pesos between 2021 and 2027.
During the event, Durazo highlighted that the new highway will improve the transportation of people and goods between Sonora and Chihuahua, while strengthening regional competitiveness by facilitating the movement of agricultural, manufacturing, and industrial products to markets in the Pacific Basin through the Port of Guaymas.
Modernizing the highway to connect Sonora with Chihuahua
The governor stated that this infrastructure will also boost tourism in destinations such as San Carlos and create new development opportunities for municipalities located along the highway corridor.
Meanwhile, the head of the SICT reported that the Guaymas-Chihuahua highway will have a total length of 450 kilometers, with 252 kilometers located in Sonora and 198 kilometers in Chihuahua, making it one of the most important highway projects in the country.
Through this project, the Government of Sonora seeks to improve mobility, attract investment, and establish the state as a strategic point for national and international trade, taking advantage of the logistical capacity of the Port of Guaymas and its connection with northern Mexico.
