Puerto Peñasco, also known as Rocky Point, is one of Arizona’s most popular weekend and holiday destinations. With its popularity, heavy traffic often occurs along the Ajo Sonoita Highway (SR 85), the Lukeville Port of Entry, and the Mexican Federal 8 highway.
To help travelers better prepare for these conditions, officials in Arizona and Mexico are collaborating to provide updated traffic information.
The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) announced that it will start adding updates for the Mexican highway on AZ511, the state’s traffic information system, beginning with the Thanksgiving weekend.
Sonoran officials will relay traffic information to ADOT, where operators will enter it into the system.
“ADOT’s vision is safely connecting people and empowering the economy, and this joint effort with our partners in Sonora is helping us expand that to peak times for travel to and from Puerto Peñasco,” said Jennifer Toth, ADOT’s director.
The pilot project is a collaboration between ADOT, the Arizona-Mexico Commission, the Arizona Office of Tourism, and a Sonora commission focused on U.S. relations.
“This is a perfect time to expand the critical traveler services offered by AZ511, as we always welcome increased drive visitation from Mexico during this time of year,” said Lisa Urias, director of the state’s tourism office. “Visitors from Mexico love coming to Arizona to visit family and shop during the holidays, and AZ511 helps make the international travel experience as enjoyable and efficient as possible.”
In addition to the AZ511 website, an app is available for both Apple and Android devices.
