Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador promised on Wednesday that he will guarantee that undocumented migrants in the United States have access to the vaccine against covid-19.

The president made this announcement after the controversy of the governor of Nebraska, Republican Pete Ricketts, who on Monday suggested that the undocumented would not receive the antidote despite being essential for the state’s food industry.

“We are going to ask the Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE) to take care of this, I believe that for humanism, also for ethics, everyone should be vaccinated,” López Obrador argued in his morning press conference.

The president’s statements come a day after the annoyance that the Foreign Ministry expressed over Governor Ricketts’ position.

In Nebraska, two out of every three employees in the meat industry are undocumented and almost 70% of undocumented migrants are essential workers, shared Maki Teramoto, general director of Protection of Mexicans Abroad at the SRE.

Roberto Velasco, director for North America at the Foreign Ministry, denounced that denying the vaccine against covid-19 “goes against basic human rights.”

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard reaffirmed that Mexico “does include everyone in its vaccination plan.”

López Obrador recalled that in the United States they have only applied 5 million vaccines, so there is still an opportunity to manage the inclusion of undocumented people.

“There is still time and we are in time for all our countrymen to be vaccinated and we would do all the procedures so that they are not denied that possibility,” he said.

In the United States there are about 10.5 million undocumented immigrants, according to Pew data. Research Center.

Of these, an estimated 47% are Mexican, which is equivalent to 4.9 million.

Faced with an express question, López Obrador asserted that Mexico would vaccinate its countrymen in the United States if the governors deny them access to the drug .

“We are trying to resolve that we have enough vaccine to be able to vaccinate at the end of March, that is the purpose, to all the elderly in the country, but that is what corresponds to our plan and also to help them not stop vaccinating in the United States to our countrymen, “he said.

Mexico, which accumulates more than 1.46 million cases and almost 129,000 deaths from covid-19, is one of the first countries to start vaccination against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.
But the country has only received slightly more than 100,000 doses of the antidote from Pfizer and BioNTech, all applied to health personnel.

The president recalled that from next week weekly batches of this vaccine greater than 400,000 doses will begin to arrive, which will allow immunizing all health personnel who fight covid-19 at the end of this month.
